Our own private Oscar race
>> Mirror readers sound off about what the Academy did and didn't do right this year
When Oscar speaks, people listen--or so it would seem, in light of the results of our second annual extremely popular Alternative Academy Awards race. Several hundred Montrealers responded to our 11 Alternate Academy questions. Here are the results (drum roll, please):
Most overlooked performance: Gay actor Rupert Everett (My Best Friend's Wedding), perceived as slighted by the Academy this year in lieu of straight actor Greg Kinnear's nomination for his minstrel performance in As Good As it Gets, earned him a whopping 33% of the vote. Following up were '70s icon Pam Grier (Jackie Brown), 26%; Mark Wahlberg (Boogie Nights), 19%; Sigourney Weaver (The Ice Storm), 14%; Jennifer Jason Leigh (Washington Square), 8%. Best comeback: Forget the '60s and '70s icons on our list, Mike Myers won 35% of the vote by playing a '60s icon in Austin Powers. He's followed by Burt Reynolds (Boogie Nights), 22%; Pam Grier (Jackie Brown), 20%; Peter Fonda (Ulee's Gold), 18%; Julie Christie (Afterglow), 5%.
