Although he acts as the spokesperson for the 18 Chileans protesting their deportation orders from Immigration Canada, René Gonsalez is spending less time talking to media and more time sleeping these days. As the group entered day 15 of their hunger strike at St-Jean-de-la-croix cathedral on Wednesday, the strain was beginning to set in: they now spend most of their days resting on cots in a crowded, partitioned space in the church basement. Friend and supporter Eric Maya explained that Canada has a "no political refugees" agreement with Chile--an absurd treaty, he says, when former dictator Augusto Pinochet still heads the Chilean army.
