Do you know your ABCs?

As well as appearing in such highfalutin publications as The New Yorker, Esquire and The New York Times Magazine, Maurice Vellekoop's drawings also walk on the wild side. He is the only artist to have appeared in every edition of the adult comic book Drawn & Quarterly since 1990, and last year an anthology of his work, Vellevision: A Cocktail of Comics and Pictures, was published by the mag. >> This week Vellekoop arrives in Montreal for a signing of Vellevision, and his latest, Maurice Vellekoop's ABC Book: A Homoerotic Primer. Taking a decidedly erotic angle on a children's alphabet-book form, Vellekoop has each letter in the alphabet illustrated by men in different sexual positions with each other. The result is a brilliantly bizarre, otherworldly book, caught somewhere between the polar extremes of kiddie lit and gay porn. >> Vellekoop will be on hand to sign copies of both books this Thursday, March 5 at 8 p.m. at L'Androgyne (3636 St. Laurent). --Matthew Hays
