Various Caught Up soundtrack (Virgin) The obvious heavyweight on this compilation is Gangstarr's "Work," happily heralding the arrival of their imminent new album. Other bomb tracks include "Cross My Heart" with Killah Priest, Inspectah Deck and the Gza representing Wu-Tang, and SFTP's "R.U. Still Down?" My advice is to check this movie on a Tuesday night and try to pass the time until the new Gangstarr drops. 6/10 (Scott C.) Various Long Journey Home soundtrack (Unisphere/BMG) With a score composed by Paddy Moloney of the Chieftains, several big names in Irish music--including Elvis Costello, Van Morrison, Sinéad O'Connor--lend their voices to this accompanying soundtrack for the documentary of the same name. Although some tracks stand out, especially "Shenandoah" featuring Van Morrison and the Chieftains, you can't escape the feeling that you're being forced to sit through Far and Away. 7/10 (Michel Thibodeau) The Beatnuts The Spot remix EP (Violator/Relativity) The Beatnuts have a reputation for coming through with a consistent street-corner style, noted mainly for their production skills. This EP is Psycho Les and JuJu flippin' some previously released B-sides and some new remixes as well. The "Off the Books" remix with Big Pun is given a (new) old school shine, while the "No Equal" remix will peel the paint off of your walls, no problem. 8/10 (Scott C.) Various Jazz Underground--Live at Small's (Impulse/Universal) Small's is a NYC club where a $10 admission gets you not only non-alcoholic drinks gratis, but also live jazz from 10 p.m. through 8 a.m. This CD was recorded there last July and spotlights the cross section of music the club presents. The six groups heard here range from Across 7th Street to the Jason Linder Big Band. None are too well known, but all offer something of musical interest. Both the CD and the club are well worth checking out. 8/10 (Len Dobbin)
