Workshop leader Doreen Stevens sets about making a native mask using the face of 80-year-old Kahnawake resident and activist Mary Quinney. Stevens led a mask-making workshop as part of a weekend conference organized by Aboriginal Women of Montreal (AWM), as part of that organization's drive to establish a native women's health resource centre in the city. "The urban native experience is fundamentally different from life on the reserve," says AWM's Caroline Tate. "It's difficult to build a sense of community in an urban environment, but that's what we're trying to do." Photo by Gunther Gamper>>>
