Cops enforce their anonymity?

On Tuesday, Philippe Whitehead went to the MUC's operation centre on Guy, along with 21 other activists, including Yves Manseau of Citizens Opposed to Police Brutality (COBP). He formally charged police with assault, and then again did what had angered police the day before. >> On Monday, Whitehead was at the police station marking police names and badge numbers off a billboard when a police woman confronted him. According to Whitehead, she demanded, "Why are you taking these names?" He responded, "Is there a law against it?" "It's just not done," she told him. >> Five officers then came out, "pushed me against the wall and emptied my pockets." After being manhandled, the police produced an arrest warrant for Whitehead, who had unpaid fines. One officer took Whitehead's list and, when he saw the names of two officers, Dominic Chartier and Michel Garneau, "he freaked out," said Whitehead. >> After being shoved, shouted at and detained for two hours, he was released from jail in the early evening. When Whitehead returned the next day with 21 supporters in tow, police readily admitted that taking down officers' names and numbers was perfectly legal. --Bernard Cooper
