>>> The COMIX Mirror

There's nothing more headache-inducing after a season full of good cheer than to stumble into the street, pick up your favourite newsweekly, crack it open and find it chock-full of dizzying, shrunken fonts. So it is with our reader's wellbeing at heart that we present what we hope is a sight for hungover eyes: the Mirror's first annual all-comix issue. Actually, our intentions are somewhat serious: we at the Mirror believe that Montreal doesn't see enough of its comix art. While this city has for years been recognized as a top source of drawing talent, producing some of North America's best comix artists, most of us wouldn't know it. Though a handful of local comix artists earn some kind of a living from their work, most, if not all, of their gigs are commissioned from outside of this city.

So time has come to acknowledge Montreal as the comix capital it is. We've invited some of the city's best underground and mainstream satirists, political cartoonists, illustrators and comix artists. We are also proud to bring back artists from the Mirror's past: Rick Trembles, Peter Sandmark (Slumdog), Benoit Melaçon (Humdrum Soup) and Napoléon. We hope you enjoy the Mirror in pictures.

Much of the credit for this issue goes to our resident illustrator and music writer Rupert Bottenberg, without whose indispensable knowledge the all-comix Mirror would have resulted in nothing but Bazooka Joe and stick men. Above illustration by Marc Bell
