Silver Scooter The Other Palm Springs (Peek-A-Boo) Hopped up on Superchunk-y sodas as they skip over weathered Pavement-coloured licks, this nouveau Texas trio crack some favourite pop punk formulae with sprightly song structures and a jangly-eyed wink. Yet Silver Scooter manage to sound Eastern as opposed to Southern, if there is such a believable distinction. They do get a glorious little buzz going once in a while ("Long Fence"), but for such an apparently sun-baked band, maybe they should've called this one Grey Days, Girls and Catching Fish. 6.5/10 (Lorrie Edmonds) Flying Saucer Attack New Lands (Drag City) Back after a two-year hiatus, lo-drone guitar maestro Dave Pearce has kept busy with his quest to reformulate those poised, interstellar freakouts best associated with his Bristol-based craft. Former vocalist Rachel Brook is gone (jettisoned with space junk?), but episodic entrancements submerged in a timeless "Past," "Present" and "Forever" will again leave you wondering just how does Pearce coax those celestial sounds?! 9.5/10 (Lorrie Edmonds) Aeon vs. Nivoc/Miracle Flash Entering the Age of Aquarius EP (Ascend) This is the first release from the Montreal-based Ascent label, featuring local techno artists Aeon and Miracle Flash, along with the recently moved French DJ Nivoc. Far from being a connoisseur of so-called "psychedelic trance," I'll simply say that it sounds as good as anything I've ever heard in the style, which says a lot about the quality of our local talent. Not particularly ground-breaking, but fans of the genre will be pleased. 8/10 (Mateo)
Patrick Dream Sona Anthems Vol. 1 Waking up at 8 a.m. to dark skies will not be such a bummer if you can listen to this mixie on the metro to work. It's the right time to bite back into this summer's huge anthems from Van Helden and Daft Punk so you can remember that you did have a life when the weather was warmer. Good mixing, predictable selection, no complaints! Available at In Beat. 7.5/10 (Mireille Silcott)
