Punk against violence against women

Punk rock recently acquired an unusual new group of fans: the women of the Montreal women's shelter Herstreet. Please Do Not Feed the Pigeons is a punk rock compilation CD produced by 21-year-old former Concordia student Thibault Duchene and his label, Skooby Snack Records. For every $10 CD sold, Herstreet receives $2. >> Herstreet founder Leonie Couture says she was touched by the offer of funding. "It's not my style of music," Couture laughs. "The music seems to reflect anger and rage. But young people have something to say--maybe we should listen to them." >> According to Duchene, "Punk rock has to do with change and positivity. Kids listen to what they like and support what they believe in. It's their money that is going to Herstreet." >> Please Do Not Feed the Pigeons includes bands from across North America, including Montreal's All the Answers, California's Anti-Flag and Rhythm Collision and Boston's Converge. The CD is available at the Alternative Book Shop, 2035 St-Laurent. --Chantal Martineau
