Temple burns and Downtown Brown ...goes house? by MIREILLE SILCOTT What does one say about a club opening that is extremely embarrassing for all involved? How just thinking about it is gloomy? Well. I could say that the empty opening of Temple sucked. But that would be understated. So I'll leave you with this thought: the Temple space has housed all kinds of night clubs in the past. But before any dance floor found the place, it was a funeral parlour. And there was, of course, a chamber in that parlour designated for storage of dead bodies awaiting ceremony. Take a guess: in which room did the Temple-ites decided to put their free buffet? Which brings me to the subject of Rob Brown. Not because the suburbo-king funky break jock is dead cosmopolitan (sorry--irresistible) since he's moved to the Plateau. But because I saw Rob DJing at Sona lounge on Friday after Temple, and realized that poor 'ol Brownie just doesn't get much props. He works. He toils. He troubles. "I'm trying to play house now, you know," he told me. "I'm don't wanna play funky break anymore--it's cheesy. But that's what the kids want." No kidding! All those techie bluestockings, who say Fatboy Slim and Two Fat Guitars and all the rest of Rob's fats aren't good music, have had their heads stuck up their skinny Guidance record sleeves for too long. And this situation won't do, because we have enough house DJs. So make sure you catch Rob at Sona lounge this Friday. Tell him you like his breaks, and if he plays a 4/4, whack him with something. >>> The most, er, interesting concept for a party is coming up this Saturday. Storm is putting on its FX party, where the feature of the night is fancy lighting effects à la Twister, and not guest DJs. Sound like a catastrophe? Yes it does, because on the bill are tornadoes, blizzards, earthquakes and special guest... RAIN! Now I know you've been waiting for rain to appear in a Montreal nightclub for a really long time. After all, rain's always on the charts in the UK, but if rain isn't enough for your $18, then please note that rain will be supported by DJ Nikola T, Symbiotix and some live bongo schtick (info: 94-STORM). >>> News you need! Goldie is NOT coming to Montreal on Nov. 8. Oh, surprise. * DJs Tiga and Mateo have been asked to remix Bran Van's big tune "Drinking in L.A." * Put some Grace in your face! G. Jones IS coming to Limelight on Nov. 9. Confirmed! * Deep house daddy Cevin Fisher has admitted that he was once a road manager for New Kids on the Block. Credibility dropping and no Paradise Garage references can help you now, Cev. >>> Copyright Liberation Front... Has moved to the Compact Discs column. DJs, we need your fabulous mixed tapes for review! Send or drop them off to the Mirror at 400 McGill, H2Y 2G1. And don't rely on "friends" getting them to us, because "friends" seem to keep your cassettes, and probably even record over them.
