Angel >> FRAPRU When you unwind this social housing activist group's anagram, you get Front d'action populaire en réamenagement urbain--one of the longest and most complicated names of any group in the province. But they also happen to be one of the most remarkably effective groups out there. When Quebec Finance Minister Bernard Landry brought down his austerity budget last spring, the one cause he did find money for was social housing--a direct result of FRAPRU's pressure tactics. Last Tuesday, FRAPRU took aim at the federal government, presenting Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Stéphane Dion with an invoice for $195 million--their estimate of the amount that Ottawa has cut from its transfer payments to Quebec for social housing.

Insect >> Senator Pat Carney So far as Carney is concerned, forget national unity--what we need are more separatist movements nationwide. The heavyweight former Tory cabinet minister, with a history of being dispatched by Prime Minister Mulroney to difficult ministries in need of an iron fist, said last week that if Ottawa doesn't come up with a few million dollars for the salmon fishery, then B.C. should consider secession. Her "show-me-the-money-or-I'm-walking" brand of separatism is so base, it doesn't even try to pretend to have roots in historical relations. Enough with the ransom notes!
