Smoke 'em if you got 'em If you've been having trouble finding decent pot lately, you're not alone. Common wisdom has it that the city's non-stop summer party has burned up most of the available supply, creating a dry spell that will probably last until the numerous outdoor crops are harvested later this month. But according to a west-end marijuana grower/wholesaler who chose to remain anonymous, the current situation is the result of Montreal pot being exported to the United States. "Eighty per cent of the good hydroponic [marijuana] from here is being sent to Boston and New York right now," said the grower. "The top price in Montreal is about $3,200 a pound, but down there you can get $4,000 American, no problem. Most of the people in this business are sending their stuff to the States because they can make, on average, $2,000 [Cdn.] more a pound than they would here." One of the reasons for the export boom could be the much higher quality of our local product. Montreal marijuana contains up to 24 per cent THC, according to Gerry St-Onge of the RCMP's Montreal drug section. That's about 20 times stronger than the average American outdoor crop.
This city's status as a source of world-class hydroponic weed is little solace to ganja-deprived Montrealers, however. Increased exports could lead to frequent shortages and even occasional marijuana droughts. Meanwhile, back at the marijuana farm, business is booming. "Everything I grow, and whatever else I can get my hands on, is sold in the States almost instantly," said the grower. Robbie Dylan
