Disobedience schoolTuition fee increases mean students now pay thousands for instruction in tired old philosophies and newfangled math formulae. But for a fraction of the price, you can learn to defend your fundamental right to things such as... cheap tuition. For the most cost-effective course in town, check out the one-day civil disobedience workshop hosted by Canvas at Concordia's Simone de Beauvoir Institute on August 16 from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The cost is a reasonable $5 donation. For any "student" interested in non-violent protest, the syllabus includes instruction on how to react when arrested by police, self-defence in court proceedings and how to achieve consensus under pressure. Canvas is a civil disobedience group participating in "Plan G," a large-scale protest against provincial cutbacks planned for November 1 to 3 in Quebec City. This workshop is essential for those planning to help blockade the legislature in this demonstration.
"We need a creative way to illustrate our discontent with the provincial government's move toward neo-liberalism," said Canvas spokesperson Patrick Borden. "Protesters need to learn what it really means to be arrested when they're fighting for a righteous cause." For registration contact Canvas at 844-0570. Tracey Peever
