Ayatollahs assaholas

Montreal is having a banner year for tourism. Perhaps that's all the better for the Health Ayatollas; the record-breaking numbers mean festival organizers are only more embarrassed by their tactics.

After showing up at the Jazz festival with mock programs and a flesh-and-blood Grim Reaper, the Ayatollahs have duplicated the stunt for the Just for Laughs festival. And while their tactics may seem humorous, there's nothing funny about their Just for Coughs program's attack on festival producer Andy Nulman, who Ayatollah member Annie Nonime calls "the number-one defender of the tobacco industry."

After serving police with a mise en demeure to stop harassing them at the Jazz fest, the Ayatollahs are now operating with impunity. "They called the police down to the Just for Laughs site to kick us out, but the cops just stood and watched us," Nonime reports.

Nonime (not her real name--duh) has no qualms about scaring tourists away. "Tobacco, when used according to manufacturers' directions, is lethal," she said. "Just for Laughs survived for years without tobacco sponsorships. It can do so again." The Ayatollahs and the Reaper will be back at Just for Laughs on Thursday evening. Philip Preville
