Ableist cars?!

Transportation activism is more far-reaching than you might think. Right to Move is a Montreal-based advocacy group dedicated to "the struggle for access to reliable, safe, efficient and socially responsible transport systems."

According to their literature, "Right to Move joins others in the struggle against poverty, racism, sexism, ageism and ableism reinforced and re-created in the current auto-centered transportation system in Montreal." Aside from the fact that heterosexism has somehow been omitted from the organization's creed, it seems a bit of a stretch to blame so many heavy social trends on cars.

Anyway, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. this coming Saturday, July 27 at Parc Lafontaine, Right to Move is organizing a "bicycollect" to gather up old, unwanted bikes and recycle them--a worthy cause, whatever your beliefs. Philip Preville
