Tony Bennett

Date & venue: Monday, June 30, Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, PdA

Musical style: "Like early Chili Peppers."

Stage Antics: "A little two-step, a couple of spins and a guest spot by B.C. singer/pianist Diana Krall. Should've been a duet!"

Audience reaction: "When Tony walked on stage he got an immediate and extended standing ovation. When it finally died down, he said, 'Thank you very much. I'm just going to go back to my hotel now.'"

Best moment: "The final song before the encores: a gorgeous version of 'I'll Be Seeing You' that he really had to project because he put down the microphone to sing it! Forget about MTV--we really did get Tony Bennett unplugged."

Drawbacks: "The same pacing on too many of the songs, which were four-fifths hush/swing with the final fifth a disproportionate crescendo."

Critic's reaction: "The only thing missing was my mother."
