Resto trash City Hall's agenda often slows down during the summer months. But as the July 7 council meeting approaches, a controversy is brewing over a proposed construction project on St-Laurent just north of Sherbrooke. The proposal for a new 6,000-square-foot restaurant, to be built in the empty lot beside Café République, has the surrounding establishments angry. The reason, they say, is that the building's blueprints do not include a side or rear entrance. "All their deliveries will have to go through the front door, which means more double-parked trucks on the street," says Bacci co-owner Georges Saraga. "And their garbage will be dumped on the sidewalk as well."
City Councillor Michel Prescott supports the other owners despite what he calls "the sudden rise of their civic spirit." "They have an interest in blocking a new competitor," Prescott admits, "but even so, they're right. St-Laurent is enough of a mess already without the additional trucks and trash." Philip Preville
