Ildo Lobo Nos Morna Portuguese colonialism has had a silver lining for the African island of Cap Vert, home of world music superstar Cesaria Evora. Brazillian elements have been smoothly integrated into the island's musical culture and Ildo Lobo's melancholy chorus of guitars prove that point. Maria Alice, however, thickens the samba soup with African soukous and even touches of zydeco, and her cheerful vocals hold it together. Ildo Lobo 7/10, Maria Alice 8/10 (Rupert Bottenberg) Various Men In Black Soundtrack (Sony) Yikes! It's Will Smith! And he's fighting space baddies again and he's singing about it and he's brought friends! OK, it's not that scary; in fact some of it is kinda far out. Like "Some Cow Fonque (More Tea Vicar?)" by Buckshot LeFonque and The Roots with D'Angelo and Erykah Badu teaching us about "The Notic." Hell, even Will's a little spacey on "Just Crusin.'" But yet another "Forget Me Nots" sample on the title track! Now that's scary. 7/10 (Gerard Dee) |
