On the rebound

In a year when the Fringe is proclaiming its many changes (new location, management and sponsors), some things still remain the same. Here is a sample of returning Fringers who are bringing back their unique style to the festival--some are riding the wave of their past success, while others just don't give up.

Same Great Taste "Titters" (Janis Kirshner/Laura Mitchell)

This Montreal's female comedy duo bring an all-new show of comic sketches, song and stand-up to the Fringe, where they have previously presented Female Bondage and Lashed but not Leashed. This time around the comic duo tackles issues of the past with a '90s twist, such as the boob-a-rang--a highly inventive weapon made of bra underwire.

Eros of Love & Destruction II (Shakti)

Shakti's back with a sequel to last year's production, Eros of Love & Destruction, using her Japanese/Indian dance style to interpret woman's liberation, sexuality and descent into madness. An international success, Shakti leaves her audiences either enthralled by her exotic-bordering-on-erotic dance or watching attentively, fearing she'll pounce on them if they blink.

Waiting for Gastritis Gross Obscenity Production (Harry Crane) & Wise Up! Sucker Insipid Productions (Harry Crane)

After his successful 1996 Fringe debut In the Car, Harry Crane attempts to repeat history with two plays. In Waiting for Gastritis, Crane takes you on a tragic but comedic journey into the teenage lives of Billy and Bob, while Wise up! Sucker tracks the lives of five 20-somethings over one wild summer.

The Concrete Aftertaste Portico Blue (Sam Ruano)

Sam Ruano's Portico Blue Productions return to this year's Fringe with The Concrete Aftertaste, a suspense drama recounting the events surrounding the 1940s death of rich playboy James Deville. Portico Blue, who presented Wet Paint in '95 and Fine Grooming in '96, bring their new show to the Fringe after a successful run at the Centaur Theatre's X-treme Directions project.
