You never know what you have 'til... ...it's gone massive somewhere else. This week, that somewhere was Rimini, Italy, at the DMC World Mixing Champs, where our 15-year-old DJ A-Trak represented Canada. And won first place. And he did it with only cuts and no body rock. Toronto crabbies who complained of tomfoolery when our kid won the Canadian eliminations can suck on that, then. And here's something for T.O. and its "largest drum & bass scene outside England" to swallow. The venerable Basement Records UK has offered localites Double "A" & Twist their own division. They've asked the two to start a imprint after the duo's Dune record sold out everywhere. "We can't believe it," says Double "A." Understandable, given the ego-diminishing fiasco at the Volume 2 party featuring himself, Twist, Jordan Dare and Washington's Slant last Saturday. The party was booked at Club Neville's. This is how it went: 10pm-11pm: Said DJs set up. Volume patrons begin coming in. 11:30pm: Girlies with big hair start arriving in hordes. 11:35pm: DJs wonder why these types would come to a drum & bass night. 11:50pm: DJs are told girls came for a birthday party for a gal named Shawana, realize they've been swindled by a double booking. 12am: Neville's manager informs all that he will DJ the rest of the night. Plays "Just an Illusion" for the Shawanas. 1:40am: Manager plays "Sexual Healing." Most Volumers leave. Double "A" drinks fourth scotch. 1:45am: Manager plays George Michael's "Freedom," Shawanas go mental. Few Volumers remain. Double "A" drunkenly muscles in and slaps J. Majik's "Your Sound" remix over George Michael. Shawanas leave. 1:50am: Manager capitulates and says, "Give it up for bass & drums music!" in mic to sparse crowd. 2:11am: Double "A" says he and Twist are thinking of moving to D.C. But let's try convincing them not to. Fax your top reason why the duo should stay to 393-3173 under the heading "As Montreal as... Bass & Drums!" The best three answers will win Moonshine's Funky Desert Breaks 2 compilation and be published. Faxes (don't forget name and phone number!) must be in by June 16. |
