Storm ahead Unequivocally, the worst book I've ever bought is one preposterously titled What Kind of House Party is This? by former Mixmag writer Jonathan Fleming. In it, Fleming does very bad interviews ("So, got any hobbies?") with some very good DJs. One of his victims is Tony Humphries, a man he calls legendary--a title he uses to describe 13 out of the 81 jocks in his excruciating tome. Well, Fleming was on the money with Humphries. At least according to DJ Magazine (which has called Humphries a "God-like genius") and also according to producers like Romanthony, who have mythologized Humphries's name in tracks--who can forget that special "Tony-Tony-Tony-Tony-Tony Humphries" sample? So where's Humphries, the grand fromage of deeeep house, now? Besides being at the official opening of Playground's new incarnation Storm this Sunday ($15/door), he's scooting around megaclubs in Europe, miles away from the house foundations he built at New Jersey's low-ceilinged club Zanzibar in the '80s. Storm might remind him of those early days, if only for its authentic wooden dancefloor. "They redid the place from A to Z," says Storm DJ and former Playground don Mark Anthony. The concrete black hole that inevitably left plaster bits in your undies and grime on your everything has been cleaned and made--hold tight for the nightclub protocol of the day--intimate. A floating discourse about a return to vocals in house compliments Humphries's return and our new intimate afterhours. "It's inevitable," says Anthony of the vocals that have been missing in house for the past couple of years. "It's the full-circle syndrome." But for those who don't care for ever-spinning trend spheres or for wailing choruses of "You! You got the love, the love that lifts me higher! Higher!" present techno-crossover darling Josh Wink brings his Higher States of acid warbling to Storm on Friday. His salon dreads arrive with Ovum cohort King Britt and localite Luc Raymond ($25/door). 1298 Amherst, doors open 1am. Info on pre-parties and extras: 94-STORM. |
