Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers The Best Of... (Virgin/EMI) The son of The Legend had big shoes to fill when he decided to pursue his own musical career, but he defied the critics and delivered four solid albums from 1988-93. Specializing in party music with a social edge, the younger Marley effectively blends reggae and urban rhythms that make for a universal appeal. This is a great retrospective of a conscious party already in progress. 8/10 (Gerard Dee) Bob Mover Television (DSM/Unidisc) Saxophonist Bob Mover is one of that rare breed, a man unafraid of taking musical chances. The pianist, John Hicks, is also a world-class player and in trumpeter Jake Wilkinson we have a genuine discovery. The program, recorded live on the last day of the quintet's February Montreal stay, mixes obscure standards like "This is New" and "Something to Remember You By," "Airegin" (a piano trip number) and exciting originals, including Mover's title piece. 9.5/10 (Len Dobbin) Frank Bennett Five O'Clock Shadow (Mercury) Sorry, Frank, but happy hour's over at the cocktail lounge. Toronto's Jaymz Bee and the Royal Jelly Orchestra already pulled this stunt (pop jazz covers of AOR rock standards) and, frankly, they did a better job. Bennett's no prize as a crooner, and Pearl Jam I can do without in any form. 4/10 (Rupert Bottenberg) |
