Jérôme Minière Monde pour n'importe qui (Lithium/Delabel/Virgin) Finally a domestic release for the debut album from this jeune homme français living in Montreal, just before he does a run of shows with compatriot Dominique A, to whom he's often compared. Some folks put the inevitable "saviour of chanson française" spin on Minière, but there's no need to saddle him with Brassens just because he's "quiet." Minière is a highly original singer-songwriter who creates atmospherics with tape loops, vibes with synths, and painting with poetry. 8/10 (Chris Yurkiw) At Cabaret May 2, 8 & 9
Son Volt Straightaways (Warner Bros.) Both releases here have Brian Paulson (Slint, Superchunk) on production in these fine testaments to country rock. Son Volt's Jay Farrar's lyrical brilliance has travelled well since his days in Uncle Tupelo. The Jayhawks are more rock to Son Volt's country, but both releases shine with honesty and dirt roads spitting up dust. If you are looking for tan twang without country corniness then look no further. Both 8.5/10 (Johnson Cummins) Pennywise Full Circle (Epitaph/Cargo) Maintaining massive popularity with the young crowd, Pennywise don't veer too far from the familiar skate/snow/surf sound. Although musically tight and lyrically positive, Full Circle is the same album Pennywise have recorded on Epitaph for six years. A new in-studio version of "Bro-Hymn" from the first release is dedicated to bassist Jason Thirsk, who died last year. All in all, nothing new here. 7.5/10 (John Turner) Various Holding Up Half The Sky (Shanachie)
World beat enthusiasts will want to check out this showcase for African female talent. Singers representing 11 African nations spin tales about everything from circumcision ceremonies to typical romantic follies. Though total enjoyment would involve understanding the various African languages represented here, this is still a good disc for anybody who wants an introduction to some of Africa's brightest stars, including Miriam Makeba and the Mahotella Queens. 7.5/10 (Gerard Dee)
