Keeping Contact

The conventional wisdom of contemporary cynicism dictates that anyone with a computer can publish their own newspaper. But five years after Egbert Gaye started Community Contact, a paper for the black community in the city, he can attest to the fact that it's not quite as easy as it's made out to be.

"I do the editing, the proofreading and the distribution--I drive around in my car and drop the papers off," Gaye says. "The paper depends on a lot of volunteer workers and writers. It's a big collective effort."

Like all community newspapers, Community Contact is funded solely through advertising revenues--which, in Montreal's current economy, aren't enough to make ends meet. Community Contact will be celebrating its fifth anniversary with a fundraiser this coming Saturday, April 26 at the Town of Mount Royal Community Centre, 90 Roosevelt Ave. in TMR, starting at 7 p.m. The evening includes dinner and performances by Lorraine Klaasen and Claire-Jean Charles. Tickets $45. Info: 489-4540. Philip Preville
