Kinnie Starr on fax!
Name: Alida Kinnie Starr Age: 31, 22, 33... whatever you want Occupation: Music maker, also maker of other art stuff City of residence: Vancouver, B.C. (home of big trees being cut real fast... fast enough to wreck the whole PLANET!) Is Kinnie Starr your real name? I would not be so cheesy as to make up a name like this one! You call your music chunk hop. Sounds great, but what does it mean? I think it means many styles--from chunky simple style to straight-up poetry to fat beats to pop to rock-ish grooves. Does it have anything to do with Chunky soup? No. But if you make me or Sam [Cino, drummer] or Adam [Carlo, bassist] or Jacob [Cino, four-track wiz] a good stew with no meat we would embrace you fully. Please write a single-stanza rhyming poem about Chunky soup. If you don't like Chunky, feel free to use another soup. Chunky soup can be poop Stuck in a can If I eat it every day Maybe I'll become a man (is that single stanza?) Soups aside, what's the best thing about musical hybrids? Musical hybrids are just plain milky... warm. I like it when barriers come down. Any barriers--between musical styles, cultures, fashions, customs... A birdie told us you like to chill in Northern Ontariowhich is a weird place to want to hang. Why there? 'Coz it's so damned beautiful. I love Lake Huron, Georgian Bay is incredible and there's good lightning and storms (once I saw a tornado there... VERY SCARY). You often get compared to people. Name three of the most inane comparisons you have come across. 1) Portishead--'Coz of girl vocals? 2) Henry Rollins--'Coz I write about "personal agenda." 3) Alanis Morisette--I just don't get it... Here's a game, then. Find one point of comparison about yourself and the following people: White Zombie: Jacob and Sam have good dreads. Ani DiFranco: She's a much more accomplished writer but we both say it straight. Gary Numan: I don't know who he is... sorry! DJ Shadow: We're both white and grew up digging hip hop. PJ Harvey: She taught me that it's okay to play simple and heavy (and sing hard even if the notes are out). Bad Brains: They're in their own league--one of my fave bands (I cried when I saw them... cheesy but true). Rita MacNeil: She's my sister--twin, actually. You say, "I will wage war if necessary. Cool. How would you do it? With bombs? I would like to use implosion-style bombs on some chemical factories that dump in rivers, etc. It would be cool to see those f*c*ers EVAPORATE INSTANTLY. What are your views on the following? Heavy metal revival: Very cool--I love metal. Disposable art I'd rather see art made from disposables. Women in hip hop There's just not enough of us visible (yet!). Spoken word Poetry is easier to hear than read (for me @ least). You often have people in your audiences up on stage participating. What is the strangest thing that ever happened with or to a participant? A girl named Joy got up and graphically told the audience about tying up her girlfriend and getting off for her first time... it was GREAT!
