Baby
Pork records reasserts itself as the master purveyor of deep downtempo grooves. Bridging Two Worlds is an eclectic mix of virtually every genre of dance music around: house, breaks, ambient, drum & bass, etc. Although tracks loosely fit these categories, what's remarkable about Baby Mammoth is that they meld notably disparate elements (house beats with drum & bass percussion) to produce a fresh new sound that (of course) defies categorization. 9/10 Peter Crno (Movement Research)
Released in 1995, hitting the Canadian R&B charts in 1997, and way too long in coming! SFP are an R&B lover's delight. They begin with the hit single "You Want This Party Started" but go on to club style and slow country R&B (yeah, country!). They share the spotlight with great vocalists like Adina Howard ("Damned if I Do") and Roger Troutman ("You Don't Have to Be Alone"). 8/10 DJ Storm (Shades of Culture, Famous Players,"On The Real," "Butter") Various Da Bomb presents Return of the DJ Volume II (Da Bomb) Dedicated to the art of scratching and turntable manipulation? Then this double CD is for you, featuring world talents like former DMC world champion DJ Roc Raida (New York), DJ LF Peee (France), and Montreal's Kid Koala. Highlights are DJ Ruthless' "Flat Chested" and Koala's innovative "Static's Waltz" (really a waltz!). A prime investment for those interested in the revived turntable art form. A must. 7/10 DJ Storm
From the burgeoning hipster movement comes this double CD compilation that explores the fresher spectrums of jazz, drum & bass and trip hop. Composed of artists worldwide like Taran and Max 404, The Future Sound of Jazz 2 lacks typical lacklustre rehash and delivers nothing but smart sounding innovation, just in time for spring. 8/10 Gordon Field (CKUT's "Free Zone", Interchill Records)
Local DJ/Producer Fred Everything delivers a solid house excursion, on Toronto label Vinyl Peace. "Reach" is deep with swirled synth chords, the "Jazz Mix" a smooth production of layered lush keys and minimal vocal samples. "Musicality 1" pumps with reverbed synth and echoing vocal samples (hard housers will head straight for this one), while "Musicality 2" is trancey with crisp highs. This record will freak any DJ from hard to deep and garagey. 9.5/10 DJ Eddie Lewis.
The British-born DJ Jeno sums up the laid-back groovy air of San Francisco. The music he mixes on this smooth compilation goes from Black Science Orchestra's knowing UK boogie-beats to the weird drug-reverb of Yellow Sox's "Flim Flam." The disco guitars on Jeep Grizz's "Smokin Daughters" cap off a great voyage into the lost land of Full Moon parties and an acidy underground. 8/10 DJ Bobo |
