Friday, the magnificent DJ Jazzy Jeff blesses Moomba in Laval. Far from a footnote to pop-culture history, it’s unfortunate that the flyer bills him as “de Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” Since last we saw Geoffrey eighty-six Jazz from Uncle Phil’s, the pioneering producer has remained not so subtly vital to hip hop and house music. Expect a dose of both in a two-hour set worth the trek. The third monthly edition of Step Your Life Game Up, Saturday at Trois Minots, steps itself up another notch, in accordance with the prophecy. The idea here is to develop a sustainable showcase for Montreal hip hoppers to assemble, network, perform, hustle and build, the plan being to eventually import other buzzed-about Canadian talent. A diverse local line-up consisting of Magnum .357, Northern Lights, Hindu Kush, S.R.H. & Krazy K and Side-C are all in, and tryouts for the KOTD battle league round out the bill. Instead of bitching about how nothing happens here, go be part of the solution. No need for Monday-hating this week, because June 7, Reflection Eternal make their Montreal debut at Club Soda.
