This week sees a glut of new releases and re-releases for cinephiles. Where to even begin? How about Kino’s new DVD/Blu-Ray restoration of Sergei Eisenstein’s 1925 Battleship Potemkin. Even if you haven’t seen Potemkin, you’ve seen its influence in general, in the way films are shaped by montage, and specifically in the way its famous “baby carriage on the steps” scene has been referenced in films like The Untouchables and Brazil. Widely censored and recut, the film has been restored by the good people at Kino, adding missing shots and adjusting title cards and recording a new version of Edmund Meisel’s score. The disc also comes with a doc about the film and its restoration.

What else? Well, everyone’s buzzing about Criterion’s new Vivre sa vie, Godard’s 1962 classic starring Anna Karina. The disc features a vintage interview with Karina, an illustrated essay on La prostitution, the book that inspired the film, a Godard-cut trailer—and, in a booklet, his original scenario, film scholar commentary and more.

Speaking of Criterion, their new release of Fritz Lang’s brilliant, chilling M, with Peter Lorre as a child murderer hunted down by the citizens of Berlin, is something to get excited about as well. A truly haunting film—who can forget that whistling? The Criterion version features, of course, an intense restoration, created from the original camera negative. Special features include the rare English-language version of the film, which is a pretty cool thing, though it’s only included on the Blu-Ray disc of the movie. But there’s also M le maudit, a short film by Claude Chabrol, Conversation With Fritz Lang, a 50-minute movie by William Friedkin, a documentary of the film—from production to restoration—and lots more.

Finally, if you really need a break from all these glorious classics and wonders of cinema, I guess you could do worse than The Karate Kid. The first two films in the series are now available on Blu-Ray. Wax on… wax off…
