What else? Well, everyone’s buzzing about Criterion’s new Vivre sa vie, Godard’s Speaking of Criterion, their new release of Fritz Lang’s brilliant, chilling M, with Peter Lorre as a child murderer hunted down by the citizens of Berlin, is something to get excited about as well. A truly haunting film—who can forget that whistling? The Criterion version features, of course, an intense restoration, created from the original camera negative. Special features include the rare English-language version of the film, which is a pretty cool thing, though it’s only included on the Blu-Ray disc of the movie. But there’s also M le maudit, a short film by Claude Chabrol, Conversation With Fritz Lang, a 50-minute movie by William Friedkin, a documentary of the film—from production to restoration—and lots more. Finally, if you really need a break from all these glorious classics and wonders of cinema, I guess you could do worse than The Karate Kid. The first two films in the series are now available on Blu-Ray. Wax on… wax off… -MARK SLUTSKY |
