The Mirror

The Load-Down

by SHANE SINNOTT

I haven’t used the word “hullabaloo” in a while, and would like to use it to describe the general reaction to How to Destroy Angels, the new band formed by Trent Reznor and his wife Mariqueen Maandig, who a lot of people who can’t be bothered to deal with that last name refer to as Mariqueen. Their first single, called “A Drowning,” appeared for streaming last week, and while this whole genre is not really my cup of tea, I live to serve you, dear readers, and so here it is: bit.ly/cG7kAZ. Reznor has had a long love/hate relationship with the Internet, like any normal person should, and announced he was tuning out of the Twitter/Facebook fan interaction thing a while ago. It seems now that he’s had a change of heart, and is responding to fans via a Facebook page (bit.ly/9R5AtK). And before we leave the goth realm, I should point you to an outtake from the Cure’s Disintegration, which appeared in light of the three-disc reissue of that self-same album. It’s called “Delirious Night,” which sounds about right: bit.ly/9BSd5H.

Julia Hatfield, whose name you probably haven’t heard since you last pulled out your Reality Bites soundtrack, is offering to write you a personalized song on her website (bit.ly/9TYJIZ) for a grand. You place an order, send her some info about yourself, and she promises to make a song “just for you, to you and about you,” mailed on CD within three months. For those wanting a cheaper option, you can enter a lottery for a free song (there’s only going to be 21 done) for $10. If I knew 100 people willing to pay $10 and sharing the same idea, it would be amusing to see what poor Ms. Hatfield would come up with if the enterprise was treated like a joke. Would she write a song about you being an asshole?

As you read this, Latin, the latest album by Holy Fuck, is out. You can stream the fucker at bit.ly/aD7tid. Note the article I link to there uses the word “hullabaloo” too—but I started it.
