Green streets[Re: “Garden for freedom,” and “Mile End meadow life,” News, Front, May 6] It was encouraging to read the two short news stories about reclaiming green spaces in last week’s Mirror. So much of the green space in the city has been left to rot, it’s good to see fellow Montrealers out there doing something about it. The fact that the team in Pointe St-Charles actually took over what was originally the city’s job is, quite frankly, pathetic. Is this the kind of message the municipal government wants to send to its citizens? Let’s all start to do our part for green spaces and maybe the government will start to listen. >>Samantha Cowan [Re: “Green streets on the Plateau,” News, Angel, May 6] Don’t get me wrong, I like the idea of having a cute little farmer’s market right off the Main, but how is this change going to affect St-Dominique the rest of the year? I get that they’re going to close off the strip in front of the church (which is so torn up, you can’t really call it a street, more like a series of potholes), but will it also stay closed during the winter? Why would we get rid of a perfectly useful side street just because some farmers need to use it in the summer? It’s fine to shut down streets when more people are walking or biking, but it seems to me shutting it down for the entire year—especially in winter when there’s already too many cars on the road—is a half-baked idea. >>L. Borel Rotten cartoon[Re: “Rosen,” News, April 29] Congratulations to Rosen for his illustration showing the CORRUPTION in the government of Liberal Charest. It’s looking more and more like The Godfather. Traffic of influence, judges, contracts, ministers etc. Rotten, rotten. >>Karl deKyuper Sin and Raf[Re: “Raf and the Marcos family,” Letters, May 6] In my letter, you sort of missed the funny part. The man who encouraged the people to rise up against Marcos was a Catholic Cardinal. His family name just happened to be Sin. So, it was Cardinal Sin that inspired the revolt against the Marcos dictatorship. Since you sort of messed up my letter, I think you should give me Raf’s phone number to make it up. >>Edward Hitler’s little helpers
[Re: “Churchill and Stockholm,” Letters, April 29] Gee whiz, Patrice Bombardier, even you must know that Dirlik doesn’t represent all Goyim (Hebrew word for non-Jews) and that not all Goyim are anti-Semites. Or is your pathology about being a Goy showing? The first anti-Semitic Goyim of note were none other than the Pharaohs of Exodus fame. They were anti-Semites at a time when Israel didn’t even exist. Their anti-Semitism made the creation of Israel an imperative. (Are you following me Samir Omer? [“Decreasing anti-Semitism, Letters, April 22].) Hey Patrice, you remember that leaked document you predicted? How did you know that, dog? I got an email from an anonymous source (I can’t divulge who, ’cause I might lose my 10 per cent worldwide discount), but you were wrong; the people you call “Jewish critics of Israel” really do love themselves and they believe they were chosen to be loved by everyone, no exceptions. Ignorant of their own history, they readily abase themselves and acquiesce to any fictitious narrative that will get them the love and approval they seek. Not really the stuff good critics are made of, is it now? So what is it about criticism of Israel based on incontestable facts that you don’t understand? Hate driven invective rooted in outright lies, falsifications and blood libels that flush like sewage from the world’s anti-Semites is not criticism, it is merely crude anti-Semitism. Hitler said that if you repeat a lie loud enough and long enough, it will be believed. And all of Hitler’s little helpers have taken that lesson to heart. By the way, what Israel-Palestine debate are you going on about? Is that like the debate I saw on the history channel where the Nazis and the Allies were shooting, rocketing and bombing each other; wasn’t that debate called World War II where six million Jews, all civilians, were singled out for death? Now, so that you don’t get confused; a Goy is not an anti-Semite and an anti-Semite is not a critic. There is no Israel-Palestine debate, only a war against the Jews aided and abetted by an inexhaustible supply of anti-Semites and some misguided Jews. So what do you say about them Janjaweed militias raping and killing thousands in Darfur, eh? Or do we disregard the suffering of other fellow human beings because there are no Jews to blame (you still there Samir)? >>Simon Wajcer WE WELCOME LETTERS TO THE EDITOR!
