IN THE CITY

Eco-unfriendly: As city-dwellers, our interactions with the animal kingdom are pretty limited—a cute but unfriendly squirrel, a domestic canine or feline, gross little worms living in the box of Cap’n Crunch you bought last year when it seemed like a terrific idea at 4:30 a.m. etc. Otherwise our eco-system is pretty basic. But in Moscow, they have dogs that ride the metro and change trains to find better food sources, in Centralia, PA, a massive underground coal fire keeps the soil toasty warm in January and Brooklyn’s Gowanus Canal is so befouled that the hardy microorganisms within it may contain clues to unlock new cancer treatments. Baby cakes: Little baby animals are cute, right? Puppies, kittens, little Easter chicks? How about a newborn porcupine that looks like a punk Pound Puppy with progeria? (say that 10 times fast). Or a baby owl that would be cute-ish if it weren’t for its hypnotic black eyes and throat-slicing talons? Regretfulmorning presents ugly baby animals at bit.ly/aPxJZu.
