My new favourite show of 2009 was Party Down, a half-hour comedy from a creative team that included Rob Thomas (of the late, lamented Veronica Mars—not the Matchbox 20 singer) and Paul Rudd (who doesn’t actually appear in the show, interestingly enough). Now it’s out on DVD, and if you haven’t seen it, and love hilarity, I highly recommend you check it out.

Set in L.A., the show revolves around a catering company (of the same name as the show’s title) mostly consisting of aspiring or failed actors. Each episode is set at a different function they’re working at—a senior’s single night, a boat party for a spoiled rich kid, a porno award show afterparty—and while the core cast remains the same, the weekly change of venue allows for all manner of guest stars, like Ed Begley, Jr., Kristen Bell, J.K. Simmons and a truly brilliant Steven Weber (formerly of Wings).

The show’s actual stars are Adam Scott, as a would-be star who’s given up on trying to make it, Ken Marino as the idiotic boss, Martin Starr as a screenwriter sci-fi nerd, Ryan Hansen as a pretty boy up-and-comer, Lizzy Caplan as the romantic interest and Jane Lynch as a longtime showbiz also-ran (unsurprisingly, she steals every scene she’s in). The vibe—dumb boss, guy who’s too smart for his job, unobtainable love interest—feels very Office, but they manage to make it very much its own thing, while re-capturing some of the comic joy of the American Office’s breakthrough second season. If you’re a fan of that show, or Veronica Mars, or just good comedy TV, this is not to be missed.

Now that Pixar basically owns the domain of family entertainment, it’s interesting to take a look back at the films that put them on the map. Toy Story and Toy Story 2 are out on Blu-Ray (and re-issued DVD) this week, looking as spectacular as ever. Watch for the third installment, out this summer.
