Flights and arrivalsNomadic Massive’s Meryem Saci
|
by NARCEL X Montrealer Meryem Saci’s family name is pronounced “sassy,” a word Merriam-Webster defines as meaning impudent, vigorous, distinctively smart and stylish. There is no better way to describe the youngest member of Nomadic Massive, who has travelled from Algeria, through stretches with Royal Peasants and Nomadic Massive, to the stage with her new band, the Soulchestra, a mix of harmonious back-up singers, a piano serenade and members of Nomadic that balances hip hop and soul, Eastern and Western influences. All the while, she’s been moonlighting as a real estate agent while pursuing her passion for singing. With her first solo show this week, this is one songbird that is too fly to be missed. Mirror: How is your solo music different from your role in Nomadic Massive and Royal Peasants? Meryem Saci: The only difference is that I get to unleash my creativity freely. I can go anywhere, as long as I want and as deep as I feel. No concession, no compromise, no need to make things fit. However, my links to both groups are so deeply rooted that you find RP and NM in me—my positions in both crews are fundamental pillars of my artistic development. M: You’ve been through a tremendous journey. How have these obstacles made your trip into music memorable? MS: Music saved my soul. Growing up in a world where my dream was far from coming true made my whole life revolve around music. My mother left everything behind to give me all the opportunities to pursue music. We fled our country and the civil war so I could have a future. I sing my heart out and whoever feels it will be the people I touch. I strive to grow and learn more and more about music. I truly am in love with everything about it. M: Do you miss Algeria? MS: Yes and no. I do not miss the political climate but I do miss my people, the sea and the countryside. In Algeria, I learnt about the value of solidarity and humility, warm hearts and devoted souls. The soul of my country is that of a survivor. WITH DRAMATIK, VOX SAMBOU, MOE |
