House cleaning

Seth Troxler’s recent endeavours include “Aphrika,” a deep, slow, soulful, Detroit-style groove with a lethargic, sexy a cappella; “Panic, Stop, Repeat,” a rolling, psychedelic, explosive, party-igniting masterpiece; and “Hurt,” a chilled-out microhouse cut with Matthew Dear. So right away, the guy’s super versatile, and he does it with a deftness that lots of producers with his level of experience would trade their toes for. Five years in the studio is nothing to sniff at, but Troxler’s ability to realize tracks gradually and hold back on the gimmicks evokes the kind of unexpectedly bangin’ afterhours style that the old guard tend to produce and that young ‘uns often don’t understand until their first hit of ecstasy at a huge outdoor concert. He appears this Friday, March 12 at Stereo with Tiga and Thomas Von Party. Knowing those guys, it’s likely you’ll hear some pretty bulletproof sets.

There are any number of reasons to suspect that Toronto producer duo Nacho Lovers are chasing that classic, untouchable vintage of house from the golden era of Roland synthesizers. From the percussive, cosmic techno remix of Alexander Robotnick’s “Obsession” on their MySpace page to the carefully aped and reprised analog house sound on their Acid Life/Go On EP, these boys are in the business of the funky, feelgood jams of days gone by. Not that they don’t add their own contemporary digital flare to the mix—it’s almost impossible not to in these days of incredible home production and wild, anachronistic genre crosspollination. But overall, these guys basically bust out a nice aggregate of warehouse party jams evoking that turn-of-the-’90s pre-rave groove. They’re at Velvet this Saturday, March 13, and I for one think it’ll be a fabulous dance-off.

I SHALL ATTEND BOTH OF THESE EVENTS. PLEASE DO JOIN ME! jack.oatmon@gmail.com
