Disco Volante

Many humans after all

By JACK OATMON

It’s a big weekend with droves of fabulous throwdowns, so sit tight. Not unlike those bluegrass Snoop Doggy Dogg covers from a few years back, some folks from Toronto’s Humber College jazz department have decided to form the Daft Punk Tribute Band, translating robotic hits into a full band setting, complete with a horn section. They perform Friday night at le National.

Also Friday, a new regular party exploring only the vibiest of low-end freakout sounds, appropriately entitled Cosmic Bass Musica, kicks off at Il Motore featuring scene staple Speakerbruiser and residents Skin and Grand Mal. Also that night, Toronto house revivalists Azari & III DJ at Velvet.

Saturday night sees the first Moondata Productions LabProject since last year’s enchanting and hypnotic Valentine’s Day event. As usual, the programming will unite a wide variety of highly noteworthy local instrumentalists for a cross-genre, improvisational jam that challenges both the artists and the audience to expand their borders. I can’t say enough about these things. This one features members of Land of Talk, Bell Orchestre, Arcade Fire, Beast, Snailhouse and others, and goes down at O Patro Vys. Not surprisingly, that little place fills up quick for such sonic treats, so be there early. Likewise Saturday night, Turbo Recordings holds a release party for obscure analog house artist Bodo Elsel’s vinyl-only “Mein Haus,” his first in a decade. Secret guests shall appear, so you can probably speculate what that means.

And finally, Piknic Électronik’s legendary Igloofest parties, the funnest thing ever in the history of mankind, kick off this weekend. For full programming, check piknicelectronik.com, but I will mention that the likes of Jesse Rose, LA Riots and Robert Babicz will be around over the first three days, so make sure you don’t miss a favourite.
