Best Song: Madness, “Idiot Child”
Worst Song: Brokencyde, “Freaxxx”
Best Show: The Ex & Getatchew Mekuria, la Sala Rossa, Sept. 16
Worst Show: n/a

“The ragged yet sturdy grind, crunch and stomp of elder Dutch anarcho-punks the Ex dovetailed exquisitely with the searing North African mystery skronk of venerable Ethiopian sax-meister Mekuria for a show that was far more than the sum of its parts. Those parts also included a thrilling clarinet tantrum and, to the amazement of all, the Ethiopian dancer—a quivering, quadruple-jointed khat freak in a ferocious frenzy. “Show” is too mundane a term for this event. It was a mystical, mind-melting maelstrom of transcendental tones and timbres.”

Best Song: Nadja, “The Bungled and the Botched”
Worst Song: Stereos, “Summer Girl”

Best Show: Jesus Lizard, le National, Nov. 13
Worst Show: Nadja, Casa Del Popolo, Sept. 16

“Although Wolves in the Throne Room’s performance at Sala Rossa in the spring was particularly devastating, and the Ex with Getachew Mekuria had me squealing with glee, Jesus Lizard really had me electrified and proved one last time that they are still the most unsung band in rock. On the other hand, through no fault of their own, Nadja at Casa was just a bummer in the summer. Hoping to get my codeine nod on, the sound man’s insistence on keeping the volume at hush levels really grounded what should’ve been a searing night of drone and slow-moving psych.”

Worst Show: Jane’s Addiction at Lollapalooza, Chicago, Aug. 9

“Pop Montreal hosted my favourite show of the year, when Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds stormed the Metropolis. Things did start off a bit ugly, though, with local opener Tam, whose monotone vocals were submerged under her bar-rock pick-up band’s retread grunge, which was as interesting as watching paint dry. Tam did manage to shake her stupor at the end, fucking up the words and arrangement to “Anarchy in the U.K.,” soaking members of the audience with her beer and taunting them before receiving a storm of boos. At least she gave bloggers and the local press something to talk about. Cave then took the stage and really yinged Tam’s yang with the razzle-dazzle only he can deliver. Even with his trusty sidekick Blixa Bargeld no longer to stage right, Cave and Dirty Three’s Warren Ellis were all smiles. With such a long, varied career, the set-list was jam-packed with plums that received new arrangements and seemed to be played with a newfound energy. This is what rock ’n’ roll is supposed to be like.”

Worst Song: Asher Roth, “I Love College”

Best Show: The Slew, la Tulipe, Oct. 2
Worst Show: Hedley, Parc Jean-Drapeau, June 19

“Think About Life’s Pop Montreal warehouse rager was the better party, but in terms of a perfect collision of scratch turntablism and balls-to-the-wall rockage, courtesy of Kid Koala and the erstwhile rhythm section of Wolfmother, the one-night-only Slew show was the Haley’s Comet of crazy musical mash-up brilliance. I was at the reprehensible Virgin Fest as a working scribe, where Hedley proved they are the absolute worst live band currently performing.”

Best Show: Fever Ray, Metropolis, Oct. 1
Worst Show: n/a

“Karin Dreijer Andersson is the most fascinating and artistically articulate musician of the decade by a long shot. With Deep Cuts, she redefined synth pop and then, with Fever Ray, created a conceptual art project tantamount to synesthesia in the live setting. So many amazing albums were released this year I can’t name them all. Juan MacLean, Kevin Saunderson’s History Elevate, Zombie Nation, Harmonic 313, GusGus—I would be remiss not to shout out Serge Santiago, underground gem of the year. I couldn’t think of any particularly awful shows worth shitting on, so Montreal losing the incredible genius that is Khiasma is easily the most devastating thing that happened to the scene this year.”

Worst Show: Empire Isis, Club Soda, Oct. 17

“Although The Blueprint 3 was very forgettable past ‘D.O.A.’ and a straight-up disappointment to a lot of original Jay-Z fans, Jigga is still a class act in concert and well worth the steep ticket prices. The dude can put it down. On stage, with a solid six-piece band he calls the Roc Boys, he ran through two hours of music that 15,000 people in the building knew by heart. Unstoppable.”

Best Show: Raphael Saadiq, Cabaret, March 17
Worst Show: n/a

“It’s easy to forget how essential Raphael Saadiq has been to urban music over the last two decades, but his outstanding show last spring was a not-so-subtle reminder. Saadiq reached deep inside his funky goodie bag, hauling out vintage Tony Toni Tone and sparkling nuggets of Lucy Pearl, along with generous portions of his three solo albums. All the while, his tight band and potent back-up singers helped him create superlative soul to remember.”

Best Show: Bridge Burner, Mile-End, June 24
Worst Show: Rye Rye, Coda, March 9

“While Rye Rye’s tired, just-got-off-a-plane performance didn’t live up to the famed excitement of her hometown of Baltimore, Montreal brought the energy for la fête St-Jean. Megasoid, Valeo, Poirier and Face T kicked the summer into high gear with their huge Bridge Burner. There is nothing better than listening to loud music outside—particularly some of this year’s reggae and dancehall, genres that always prove themselves to be single-driven: killer tunes, crumy albums.”

Best Show (tie): Imogen Heap, le National, Nov. 27/John Legend, Metropolis, Aug. 19
Worst Show: n/a

“Imogen Heap peppered her loop- and sample-heavy show with humour, wit and crowd participation. Helming solo forays by looping her voice and instruments and sounds with her wrist mics (!), she delved into material from both her debut and recent album. Three other musicians rounded out her performance, mixing live instrumentation with live sampling. John Legend’s show was seething with soulful energy, a hype band and an even hyper crowd. Touching on all his works with simple yet immersive visuals, all who attended floated for the next few days.”

“I have seen dozens and dozens of bands play at the Mardi Spaghetti series, but nothing as touching and profound as this quartet led by Fred Bazil. Their simple ensemble lines, ecstatic solos and irresistible grooves held a packed room in a hushed trance for a solid hour. Hopefully we’ll hear more from the reticent Bazil in 2010—this band’s deep level of commitment to each other and the music is a rare find.”
