Fool’s Gold recruit Kingdom sprinkles
R&B back in the club

REALM OF POSSIBILITY: Kingdom

by MORGAN STEIKER

Ever since the release of his first mixtape in 2006, Brooklyn-based producer Kingdom has enjoyed a steady ascent into the ever-growing spectrum of club music. A child of R&B, his trademark style has made room for itself not only in the sets of influential DJs like Diplo but also on radio institutions like Annie Mac’s Mash Up program on BBC 1.

As a meeting point between soulful and sexy R&B vocals and a U.K. garage sound—often borrowing from other genres as well—Kingdom’s tracks offer a firm invitation to the marriage between the lighter and darker sides of club sounds. With lightheartedness, he drops R&B vocals that some may consider corny but which always translate into effective dance music. Although elements of his production have obviously been explored before, Kingdom is developing a distinct style of his own.

“I’m following my instincts and gravitating towards sounds that feel emotional and future-minded to me. A dark, mystical, emotional, soulful vibe mixed with heavy club bass and a bit of chaos.”

The R&B element is of course an undeniable strength to his music. Citing early Timbaland and Neptunes production, as well as the Dream and Swizz Beats, as strong influences, one doesn’t need to listen too close to make the connections even though Kingdom’s production often goes in other directions. “In my music, I use R&B vocals to bring a soulful or sweet element to a track or set,” he explains. It doesn’t feel like the main ingredient but more like icing on the cake.

His first single, the upcoming Fool’s Gold release “Mindreader” featuring NYC-based singer Shyvonne, is a perfect manifestation of the sound and aesthetic associated with Kingdom. “It’s a four-four heavy bass banger that’s an R&B song at heart, with new jack swing and U.K. garage influences as well.”

“Mindreader” will get the remix treatment by the likes of Todd Edwards, Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990. The latter two’s new label Night Slugs will release Kingdom’s yet-untitled debut EP and he’s also gearing up for another release on Mad Decent, his remix of L-Vis 1990’s “United Groove.”
