Play but don’t pay

by MORGAN STEIKER

Just a few weeks ago, I started getting e-mails from a fella that goes by the name of One Percent Free. To be honest, this person is so elusive that I can’t even say for sure whether it’s a man, woman or child, but I assume it’s a dude. I’ve been getting music in my mailbox from One Percent Free since then and regularly check his MySpace for new joints. His beats are something like a UFO. I don’t know where to put them, place them, scribe them or describe them. All I know is that I like them. His production is dope, it’s dark and it rides out without getting redundant. I’ve listened to some of his tracks on repeat for hours. He recently told me that the street release for his album is the week of Dec. 7, when 500 free CD copies will be glued on street posters all around the city, and it will also be available as a free download. For now, go listen to “The Kiss of Peace” over at myspace.com/onepercentfree, and let me know what you think.

D-sisive also just dropped a free LP online that you can get your hands on at d-sisive.com. It’s called Jonestown and it dropped last week on Nov. 18, marking the 31st anniversary of the Jonestown massacre. To be honest, I don’t really know where the connection is—according to the man, “it’s a secret.” This LP is a break from the darker material showcased on his Let the Children Die and a comeback to the more punchline/battle-rap style that he became known for some years ago. With production from Marco Polo, Moss and Muneshine, D-sisive should have the right back-up for another album full of heat.

Also, my favourite indie electro-dancehall duo Bonjay dropped their long-awaited Gimmee Gimmee EP last week, so you should catch them at Divan Orange tonight for the release party. Don’t sleep, they’re awesome. And last but not least, Atherton and P-brain recently dropped The Leathers. Get familiar.

NOT FOR SENSITIVE EARS…
