Cash for your ’stache

DJ trio the Moustache Men
keep growing for a reason

MORE THAN LIP SERVICE: The Moustache Men

by MORGAN STEIKER

In our fast-changing modern times, moustaches are often discarded relics of previous centuries—when men rode horses and wore monocles—or, in youth circles, something totally “ironic.” Either way, one thing remains—they’ve always been great icebreakers. With that in mind, prostate cancer awareness initiative Movember has appropriated the month of November for its third consecutive year in Canada, using the ’stache as its poster child. Naturally, Montreal DJ trio the Moustache Men, made up of DJs F.U.N.K., Classi Assi and New Money, are handling its soundtrack.

“I attribute it all to the webernet,” explains New Money on their involvement. “The culture surrounding Twitter makes it easy to find peers. We stumbled upon Movember and started chatting directly with founder Adam Garone. Instantly, we loved the idea, so we created a team.”

Adam Garone, a jovial Australian guy who, over the span of five years, has been able to raise almost $50-million for prostate cancer awareness with Movember, started with the simple belief that the moustache needed a comeback, and dreamt that it should be used as a tool to break the ice about men’s health. Within a few clicks, worlds away from each other, it was decided that the Moustache Men should be heavily involved.

“Like many other Montrealers, we’ve organized a team and everyone is collecting funds in every way imaginable. Our group strategy was to put our talent to the task and create a mix CD, Barbershop Music, that we can give away for every donation that we get.” Add to that a fundraiser at Three Monkeys (in Cours Mont-Royal) and an afterparty at Blue Dog.

When reflecting on whether social awareness and partying can go hand-in-hand, Classi Assi drops his two cents. “They are not mutually exclusive. Not to be banal, but a good party attracts attention, and if you can focus some of that to a cause, then you are elevating the party. The same can be said about a social cause. If you focus purely on the pursuit of justice, then you tend to alienate a good deal of people.”
