DOGR?

by MORGAN STEIKER

Hold up a minute. What’s all this I’m hearing about? From the corner to the cyphas to 60 Minutes and Oprah, the same question keeps coming up—is the gangster rapper slowly dying? Excuse me. Repeat that. Word on the street these days is that a new hybrid of MC is emerging to take the forefront of hip hop and reclaim the culture. Wordplay about kilos of coke on the table, big-ass gunplay and utter disrespect towards women with no self-esteem is out. Damn, who got that memo? I was looking through my latest records and trying to get brolic in front of the mirror on some “yeah, yeah, I’ll kill you, you don’t wanna mess with this right huur” tip. You know, my kind of therapy. Thank God I had that latest M.O.P. record (which sold about 20 copies) laying around because man, I was about to get stuck in some quirky, nerdy clown dance around the house to that new kid they call Cudi, or almost about to throw the shades on and hit those high notes à la Drake. I hope I don’t have to start reading comics again because I got used to those gangsta rap guys. They’re great storytellers, you know.

Speaking of great stories, here’s one for ya. A guy contacted me the other day. His name is Adam Lemco. He told me that he quit his high-paying corporate job to start running a studio in Montreal North called the House of Elliot, owned by Dr. Elliot Mechanic. It’s a top-notch facility that was essentially at rest until he decided to make it a haven for up-and-coming artists that don’t have the resources to record in quality spaces. His next-to-nothing rates have allowed him to work with a bunch of young artists, some of which are showcasing their skills this Sunday at Bourbon Street West (1866 Des Sources) including Black Mob, Got That Boys, Mr. Wellz, Mousemore Slim, Earthquake Soundcrew and DJ $ilenca. For now, hop over to myspace.com/thehouseofelliot to get details and contact info.
