No city does Halloween quite like Montreal, so here’s as much festive fun as we could pack into four pages. Club events are divided by day, followed by sections listing live music and miscellaneous activities. Note that most bars will stay open for an extra hour on Saturday, when the clocks turn back. Play hard, stay safe, have fun! Freaky FridayRock your body at Electroshock with DJs Law, Davidé, JonnyBonnyRock and Milkaway, bringing the spark at this dance party spectacular. Though there will be bar service, guests are encouraged to BYOB. Loft Douce-Cruelle (5505 d’Iberville, back door), 10 p.m., $5 before midnight, $10 after. Indecent Exposure and Paradise Garage presents Thriller, featuring ace DJs Mad Kids and Mary Hell supported by P.G. residents, a live performance by Shoop and a “very special surprise guest,” plus giveaways, live art and visuals. Prizes will be awarded for best Michael Jackson costume, best M.J. impersonator, trashiest girl and best costume overall. Decibel Underground, 10 p.m., $5/$10. DJ Frigid invites sexy, dangerous, cold-blooded clientele to the vampire edition of his new weekly party, Beatbox, bringing you only the best electro and classiest rock. Le Gym, 10 p.m., $4, free before 11 p.m. Dutch DJ and producer Fedde Le Grand, who hit big with “Put Your Hands Up for Detroit” and subsequent work with Madonna, launches his debut album, Output, with a Halloween masquerade ball. Opera, 10 p.m., $15. Twisted Fridays residents Rokks & Pironti take it further with Twisted Halloween, featuring guest DJs Nico Concerto and Domenic Pandolfo. Karma Club, 10 p.m. Let there be no doubt about who you gonna call at the Ghostbusters costume party ($1,000 for the best) hosted by Switch Fridays and Nightvibe, featuring “Montreal’s most fearsome DJ line-up,” Payce, Hill, Superfly, Ricky J and special guest Zoo. Light Ultraclub, 10 p.m. Akarien Productions scares up another Halloween edition of Electro-chic, a Bal Masqué for lovers of dancing and pretty pictures. Along with Chilean DJ Ricardo Tobar (known for melodic mergers of Goa and shoegazing) swinging live, expect sets by DJs Olivier Saint-Germain, FM Radio Gods and G.O’Brien, visuals by VJ Homing, paintings by Peet Massé and a video installation by le Duo Bipolaire. SAT, 10 p.m., $15/$20, advance tix at Inbeat, Psychonaut. The Halloween edition of Pop Mutant will be a Macabre Danse, with a costume contest, party piñata, free Jell-O shots, mega decor and free candy. From the soundsystem, expect everything from Black Sabbath to Elvis, the Zombies to Bikini Kill. Saphir, 10 p.m., $5. Dress sharp at Blacklight, an epic Halloween party featuring five rooms packed with DJs bringing you beats guaranteed to go bump in the night, all night, in fact, and into the morning—Nicholas Bennison, Iznogood, Alice and the Serial Numbers, Procyon Lotor and Sabi Non Stop. Saturday night deadDemons are invited to creep out of their holes and mingle among costumed humans vying for prizes at a “thrilling night of horror” with DJ Custom Pat, specialist in rockabilly, psychobilly and punk. Saphir, 10 p.m., $5. Have a peek at the awesomely costumed patrons (the best of which will be rewarded) at the Blood Red Halloween edition of Voyeur, an electro/techno/punk/pop block-rocker and heart-stopper of a party with DJs Jordan Dare and Bliss, guests Duvall and the NROTB crew and hosts Mike Tee and Talia. SAT, 10 p.m., $10. Observe party people in their natural habitat at International Geographic Extravaganza, where DJs El Nosotros, Geschwaderkommodore Von Bottenberg (aka the Mirror’s music editor), Miss Kill ChaCha Khan, the Royal Air Togo crew and Das Glockenspiel Club playing supremely danceable selections from all over the globe. Divan Orange, 10 p.m., $3. Gender Blender goes ghoulish with a “Jonnybonny Horror Picture Show,” featuring renowned artist Zilon doing “live trash painting,” DJs Jonnybonnyrock and M…kanik playing electro, rock, Britpop, disco etc., a costume contest and awards. Saphir, 10 p.m., $6. Italy’s Bloody Beatroots take wax to the max at Saintwoods.com’s Kill Halloween, with an opening set by Love Thy Brother. Telus Theatre, 10 p.m., $56.44. The eighth edition of La Maudite Halloween will happen at the new Assomoir restaurant on Notre-Dame, which will transform for this occasion into a 300-capacity party space. Dinner is optional (inquire about reservations at assommoirnotredame.com), but once the tables are cleared away, DJ Zo will lure the willing to the floor with ’80s/’90s R&B and house while fire-eaters and magicians entertain, and a professional make-up artist assists those who aren’t properly dressed. 211 Notre-Dame W., dinner at 7 p.m., dance 10 p.m., $20 in advance, $30 at the door (the latter includes one drink). Part of the proceeds will be donated to UNICEF.
If arts and crafts are your bag, make it your box for BoxxX/Cubizm, a homemade costume party (the best gets a “classy” prize), with DJs Mary Hell, Roméo Kardec and Billy Dalessandro. BYOB, be creative and be surreal, say the organizers, who will also invite guests to sacrifice their costumes in a ritual of mass destruction in the wee hours. 7250 Clark, 10 p.m., $5. Mere mortals Mark “Slaughterhouse” Slutsky (the Mirror’s film editor) and “Slash ’em” CFCF man the decks at Casaween, a haunted casa party featuring a costume contest with celebrity judge Dracula, plus cool prizes and spooky surprises. Casa del Popolo, 10 p.m., free. Across the street, fall under the spell of DJs Moonstarr, Simahlak and Scott C, and “the all-seeing eye” of “clairvoyant mystic” Tony Ezzy, whose tarot cards will foretell your fate. La Sala Rossa, 10 p.m., $8. Eresys Productions invites costumed party people to their BBQ (till 10 p.m.) and beat-laden Halloween bash, stocked with such fine DJs as Joystick, Sequential Factory, Yan Leigh. Pearl, 9 p.m., $5. Tech Safari presents its annual Halloween rave, Amazone, a psychedelic costume ball with excessive decor (feat. lasers and giant inflatables), prizes galore, a “classical ritual” and beats by world renowned DJs Etnica from Italy and Israel’s Ace Ventura, joined by Tech Safari faves Rikam, Yann and Tenzin. Bain Mathieu, 9 p.m., $35/$45. See the inside of a secret society at Skull & Bones IV, and observe the secret dance moves inspired by DJs Aikido, E-leven and Stefan. Chill, 9 p.m. The Halloween edition of Microballs will bring minimal monster beats care of Clifford Brown, Marinelli, Nathan Burns and Seko. Salon Daomé, 9 p.m. Have a “harvester’s Halloween” at Rang 13, where evil lurks in the field and resident DJs do the devil’s work in the booth. Petit Campus, 8:30 p.m., $5. There’s a Freakshow underway in the Village, with a soundtrack by DJs Peter Rauhofer and Alain Jackinsky, and a fearsome live performance by Jessy Entertainment. Parking, 10 p.m. Off island, experience Sexy Halloween, with costume prizes and door prizes, at Traffik (traffikclub.ca), or take in a suburban fairy tale (“Once upon a time at the two Chalets...”) at twin south and north shore establishments where the staff will be decked out in “Trashy Disney” costumes, and patrons are asked to follow suit (or just gawk and tip heavily). Tomorrow, Friday, Oct. 30, crawl out of your lair and join the Crypt Club, emitting blackened post-punk sounds for your pleasure. Saphir, 10 p.m., $7. Also on Friday, M for Montreal unites the forces of local odd-pop bands Creature and Call Me Poupée with mysterious Prairie maiden Ariel. Foufounes Electriques, 9 p.m., $5. Friday also see dirty Southerners (and honorary Canadians) White Cowbell Oklahoma celebrating their 10th anniversary, alongside Phil Hamelin & the Enablers. L’Escogriffe, 9 p.m., $10. Saturday is the site of a second, early Esco party, this one with up-and-coming local bands Bon Vivant, Lauréate and Golden Isles. L’Escogriffe, 6 p.m. Pop Montreal proposes Devil’s Night this Friday, with cover bands Back Stabbathhh, Dead Television Personalities and Pretty on the Outside, with DJs And rounding out the Friday night line-up, the Montreal Haitian Music Festival presents Carimi. On Halloween itself, local punks and drunks, jokers and midnight tokers are invited to NDG for Little Baby Fest II, a shiverin’ showcase of bands on (or friends of) the Little Baby record label, namely the B*ll C*sby Anarchist Society of America, Loco Motiv, Kill Zeta, Team Canada (not to be confused with the DJ team), Chix n’ Dix, Ominous Monsta, Suburban Lame Kids and Copious Amounts, most of which will be selling or giving away merch. And from the devilish decks, DJs will spin everything from grime and dubstep to punk and “retro.” EB Lounge, $7 with a costume, $10 without. Or hear the rock ’n’ roll horror of Evil Boys From Hell, Tabarnacos Surfers and Fattooth, and dress to impress/depress for prizes. Playhouse. Costumes and dancing have always been part of the Hidden Cameras show, but the Toronto collective will amp up the spectacle for their Halloween gig, with Gentleman Reg and aftershow DJs Lynne T & co. Il Motore, 9:30 p.m., $15. Woilà revels in bad vibes with its theme “Wish you were Dead,” where party peeps are asked to dress as either their least favourite living celebrity (as examples, they list Courtney Love, Céline Dion and Guy Laliberté) or a zombified dead celebrity. Playing live (music) is Le Monde dans le feu and more to be confirmed, plus DJs Fred De La Fökoff, Pââté (from les Prostiputes), Cook-a-Gogo (from Malajube) and more. Salle Milieu, 9 p.m., $5.
The othersThe Touloulou Ball takes place tonight, Thursday, Oct. 29, and in keeping with Guyanese tradition, involves masked ladies inviting men to dance—an offer no man can refuse. Expect door prizes, costume prizes and more. Club Balattou, $10, free for ladies in costume. The Halloween edition of Thursday weekly On the Rocks cranks up the trash with Mullet America (“Fuck art, let’s head-bang!”) featuring resident DJs Pat Dynamite and Mikey B, plus Mikey Heppner from Priestess. Salon Officiel, 10 p.m., free Hosted by Montreal’s own gender-bending glam rocker Plastik Patrik, The Rocky Horror Picture Show Halloween Ball returns for another six installments of cult cinema, live actors, costume contests and projectile paper, food and water. It’s the biggest event of its kind in North America, with between 3,000 and 4,000 participants in its six shows last year, so get ready to do that time warp in high style. The Rialto, Thursday, Oct. 29 (8 and 11 p.m.), Friday, Oct. 30 and Saturday, Oct. 31 (both nights 8:30 and 11:30 p.m.), $15.95/$17.95. Some girls like it Big, Black & Delicious, and if that’s how you get your kicks, peep NYC’s BBD male exotic dancers at a new upscale, uptown spot, awarding patrons for the sexiest and most erotic costumes. Saturday is final night of the annual Spasm film festival, which culminates with two events: the Grande Soirée Horreur Costumée (a screening of horror shorts) and the Bal de l’Horreur (closing party with le Matos live, a DJ/VJ set by les Enfants Terribles and more visuals by RKSS). Grande Soirée at Club Soda, 9 p.m., $15 (includes entry to le Bal); Bal at le Savoy (Metropolis), 10 p.m., $10 Film fans can also make their way to Halloween Videomusique, armed with their favourite horror DVDs. DJs Sprounchke and I for I will handle the music and film-clip requests, giving party people an earful and eyeful. Hemisphere Gauche, 10 p.m., free. Take in some scary theatre with Paul Van Dyck’s Haunted, a tale of a young barmaid in 19th century Nova Scotia who hears voices that aren’t in her head. Jack O’Lantern, at Montreal’s Museum of Archaeology and History, is a family-friendly 45-minute museum tour on the topic of Halloween traditions. Jack-O-Lantern himself leads the way through the spirit world, encountering witches, Druids and oddball twins. The man that comix legend R. Crumb called “more twisted and weird” than him will also sign and doodle copies of his recently released book, volume two of Motion Picture Purgatory.
