Dave Seaman switches it on for Black & Blue

HIGH PROFILE: Dave Seaman

by DANNY LÉGARÉ

Pioneering U.K. house DJ Dave Seaman has done it all. One of the original editors of the clubber’s bible, Mixmag, he’s also released countless comps over the course of his 25-year DJing career, remixed Pet Shop Boys, U2 and David Bowie under his Brothers in Rhythm guise, even modelled for Levi’s. The Mirror caught up with Seaman in anticipation of his return engagement at Lite Switch, the main event at this year’s Black & Blue.

Mirror: Having performed at Black & Blue, which caters to gay and gay-friendly crowds, did you ever feel the itch to throw down a Brothers in Rhythm mix of an old Kylie track?

Dave Seaman: (laughs) Those mixes are 15 years old, I think it would be a bit too indulgent. Unless we had a separate over-30 room for all us oldies?

M: DJs are known for just standing behind the decks or screens. Would it shock you if people could identify you in public in Canada?

DS: It would, yes. One of the best things about being an international DJ these days is that you get to have a taste of the life of a pop star without having to deal with a lot of the trappings of fame. The only time anyone really recognizes me is in a club environment, which is just the way I like it.

M: You have also modelled jeans for Levi’s. Is it important for you to have a public profile apart from the sound you spin or create?

DS: Not at all. That was all just a bit of fun. My friend used to be an account planner for Levi’s and wanted to do a series of ads using people that had profiles outside of the mainstream. Sister Bliss from Faithless did the same campaign, and the graffiti artist Futura too. It involved lying very still on a life-size photocopier for hours on end until they got the image they wanted. I think that was probably my first and last modelling assignment!
