The Load-Down

by SHANE SINNOTT

The RIAA vs. Joel Tenenbaum story is continuing nicely, with both sides—the RIAA more so—looking like huge assholes. Tenenbaum recently lost a court case that put him on the business end of a $675,000 decision for the RIAA, the result of sharing 30 songs using the KaZaA file-sharing program. Now the RIAA is seeking an injunction against him, for “repeated lies and continued infringement.” Tenenbaum, for his part, is playing the unloved child, and more or less begged for recognition from his Recording Industry mommy when his team issued a Tweet (this is what it’s fucking come to, by the way: “issuing a Tweet,” a stand-in for the self-serving drivel usually issued in press releases) directing folks to a torrent on the Pirate Bay Web site.

Made in supposed protest (not by Tenenbaum or anybody he knows, of course) the torrent is called “DJ Joel: The $675,000 Mixtape,” and contains a (pirated) copy of all 30 tracks he was sued for. I’m no hippie, but the fact that downloading anything can be considered a form of protest is a sad testament to either our times or my age. Joel, I’m sad to say, has piss-poor taste in music. Visit here: tinyurl.com/nselta to download it, and have your fill of predictable tracks from Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Incubus, Goo Goo Dolls, and the like.

TV On The Radio have just announced a one-year hiatus, but in the meantime, frontman Tunde Adebimpe has collaborated with Massive Attack on their new record, Splitting the Atom. You can stream the track, “Pray For Rain,” in all its intensity here: tinyurl.com/lqp8kn.

I find Feist super annoying, but you should listen to her duet with The Constantines doing “Islands in the Stream.” It’s the Dolly Parton/Kenny Rogers classic, but way slowed down: tinyurl.com/lfvd56.

Award for persistent PR this week is the guy doing the Raveonettes, who sent an e-mail claiming a co-worker of his described the new record in this way: “like Phil Spector snuck the master tapes into the prison laundry, drenched them in reverb and then hung them out to dry on Wanda Jackson’s clothesline.” Hear for yourself—“Suicide,” from the new record—here: tinyurl.com/l64aaq.
