Forum and function |
By JACK OATMON
“The lobby of the old Forum should be converted into a night club” So read my Twitter account at exactly 8:08 p.m. on July 23. I’m beginning to suspect my aspirations for the Pepsi Forum, whose entertainment career arc is already vast, might have been subliminal in origin. I refer to the fact that there are already, and have apparently been for some time, club events held there, though presumably not in the cavernous, cylindrical entrance which prompted me to tweet. Not one for stadium trance, I managed to ignore the fact that circuit powerhouses Sasha, Digweed and Sander Kleinenberg played there together around Christmas 2007. And the meatheaded millionaire stadium disc jock set is back in force this week, with Armin Van Buuren and David Guetta slated for Saturday, Sept. 5. Bust out your Dolce & Gabbana, people. Now for something completely different. Tonight, Thursday, prince of electropop and identity crisis creator extraordinaire, Felix da Housecat, lays his hands on the wheels of steel at Parking. That’s a good look to kick off the Labour Day debauchery. Moving into the weekend, Saturday night sees a flurry of good bookings. For the dope, local, low-key and new-school, check out IDM/electro hybrid wunderkind Lando Kal, of Lazer Sword, at the last edition of Super Aqua Club at Zoobizarre. That’s guaranteed. Also that night, D.I.M., Turbo Recordings’ response to new rave, finally lands in town, at Club Soda, along with Love Thy Brother and locals MadKids. That’ll be a serious back-to-class rager for all the fresh faces. And keep your ears peeled for handsome poppers Parlovr, the stage-commanding Duchess Says and Franco favs Chinatown at M Pour Montreal on Quai Jacques-Cartier, Saturday and Sunday. Finally, London Border Community Recordings head honcho James Holden returns to Piknic Saturday afternoon, the first of three consecutive editions. Ay-yay! “STUDY IS LIKE THE HEAVEN’S GLORIOUS SUN.” jack.oatmon@gmail.com |
