What the future holds for
Montrealer Sarah Linhares

BRING ON THE BEATS: Sarah Linhares

by RUPERT BOTTENBERG

Montrealer Sarah Linhares was already exploring cosmic hip hop and future soul sounds when she got a message from the past—1984, specifically—that would inform her debut EP, Messages From the Future.

“Actually, I was inspired by watching The Terminator,” she says. “I really resonated with Sarah Connor, who was given a message from her future son, which was to keep going, be strong, you’ll have to be stronger than you’ve ever believed you can be in order for me to exist. That idea kinda stuck with me, the future self telling yourself what you’ll need to know in order to achieve what you want.”

What Linhares wanted to achieve, and has, was a four-track precursor to her forthcoming full-length. Messages From the Future boasts two cool numbers produced by Moonstarr, founder and tentpole artist of Public Transit Recordings, the EP’s label. Also on deck are two of Linhares’s fellow Red Bull Music Academy grads—globetrotting Vancouverite Aklimatize, whose style Linhares calls “urban electronic stuff, bass-heavy dancefloor tracks,” and Portugal’s Camplaix. “He just kept sending me beats,” Linhares says of the latter. “He sent me this beat for the ‘It’s All True’ track, and instantly I loved it. I actually wrote that song really quickly, because I really felt it strongly.”

Linhares is already on a roll in prepping her long-player. “I put out the word that I was looking for some dope beats, and people have just been sending me stuff, so I feel pretty lucky.” She’s tapping Moonstarr again, Germany’s Jay Scarlett, Montreal’s Sikh Knowledge (yet another Red Bull Music Academy alumnus) and KenLo Craqnuques, who’ll be on hand for the EP launch at Off the Hook. “His stuff is really unique, really out there. I think it’s pretty genius.”

The launch doubles as a vernissage for Gene Pendon of HVW8 fame and Tag Team, two sisters with a knack for cool, fun design (all worked on the EP’s appearance). Of music and visual art, Linhares says, “I like the idea of bringing the two together. It makes things more inclusive.”
