Robots, undisguised

My Favorite Robot transform from DJ duo to
production team and record label

THE DROIDS YOU’RE LOOKING FOR: My Favorite Robot

by JACK OATMON

Locals Voytek Korab and Jared Simms are ramping up plans and work for their production team/record label/DJ duo combo My Favorite Robot, specializing in local electrotech artists. The Mirror caught up with Korab ahead of their upcoming launch party for their album, We Come In Pieces.

Mirror: What’s the history of My Favorite Robot?

Voytek Korab: Jared and I have been a DJing duo for about the past three years, and about a year ago, I decided to get back into production, which I’d wanted to do for some time. So we started doing that, and to get our stuff out, we wanted to have our own medium. Since we had good connections with Beatport, we just decided to launch our own label. We kept the same name because people responded to it well and they remembered it.

M: And what’s happened since?

VK: So we put out some singles and got some remixers on board. Now it’s getting to the point where we can get some really good up-and-coming names. The idea was to promote new Canadian talent rather than pursuing established artists, in order to get some people that we believed in out there while getting out our name as well.

M: What should people be looking out for on the label?

VK: We’ve been releasing stuff by James Teej, who’s done a lot of work with Radio Slave, stuff on Rekids, and he’s got an album coming out on Rekids. I think he’s one of the next big things to come out. And Jordan Dare’s done a really dope remix of one of our tracks, “In the Dark,” and in 2010, we’ve got him for an EP. We’re releasing our full-length in September. And we’ve got Kenny Glasgow, who’s been around for about 20 years. He disappeared for a while and now he’s coming back. He’s put out an album on No. 19 in Toronto, Jonny White’s label, which we’re closely associated with. Really good, solid stuff. People are freaking out about it. We have him for a mini-EP called Something Special coming out in October.
