Tonight, July 16, scene staple DJ Mini launches a remix EP of her track “Chronicles” at her longstanding Parking night, Overdose. The disc includes a dark, dubby techno remix by Ascii.Disko, a fast-paced electro overhaul by David Carretta and a gritty filter house version by Mini herself.
Also tonight, chavvy Croydon-based U.K. club-dub producer Plastician will make his Canadian debut at Passeport on St-Denis. Bust out your Adidas, mate, tuck your tee in your trousers, grab that razor and update the fade, cuz all the lads will be drownin’ in Carlsberg to this mad bloke’s heavy low-end breaks and nu-skool two-step. Massive! Brrrrrrap!
Of course, what weekend would be complete without a night of classic house, new disco, analog techno b-sides and rare-groove funk? Amongst the most consistently savvy and awesome DJs about town, the full Loose Joints trio, Chris Paré, Dave Shaw and Davey Lähteenmaa, will be in effect Friday night at Zoobizarre, sliding your backbone, cutting your rug and performing other such mojo chiropractics at their night “Body Works.”
What the hell, let’s make it two Zoobizarre nights of such old-school beats and new classics in a row, just to make sure we get ample mileage on those high-tops. Cocktail Club Soundsystem will be in the infamous upstairs basement Saturday night, along with invitees Jacob & Francis, there for a live set of acid and disco. Drop by early on for a preceding appearance of Philadelphia’s quirky, ear-tickling cosmic genre-collage creators Pattern Is Movement, who dip as far into classical and rock as they do leftfield hip hop.
For a final chance to dance as a delirious debutante this weekend, do attend the fashionable and foppish fifth anniversary of garb-hawking simians Three Monkeys, to be held late Saturday evening at 4532 Laval, a lovely loft space which will house all manner of urban sound and attire, as well as a BBQ, dance tutorials and various other indulgences. Dress to lift eyelids.
