There’s so damn much to do right now that I won’t bother with the pleasantries. Let’s just see how much of the madness I can squeeze in here. For something diverse, at times heavy, dark and dubby, at others chilled and electrifying, check dope local reggaeton DJ/producer El Nosotros along with the international ears of kitschy connoisseurs Royal Air Togo this Friday night at Divan Orange for the undoubtedly entertaining Discotheque Post-Exotique. The same night, U.K. Ninja Tune artist Bonobo graces Club Soda with his mellow summertime funk and jazzy ambient breaks.
Philly-based classic and deep house producer Pete Moss drops into Salon Daomé on Friday to get those shoes shuffling. Speaking of which, in other big, fun, funky, gay, groovy, sampled and soulful house news, local Fred Everything, Chi-town’s Justin Long and Brooklyn’s JT Donaldson are at Piknic Électronik on Sunday. Weather permitting, that should make for a pretty wild and unpretentious edition of the city’s best outdoor jam.
You’ve also got a second chance to catch the intoxicating voice, down-to-earth sass, incredible backing ensemble and general genius of New Orleans soul goddess Irma Thomas, who thoroughly wooed the Ukrainian Federation while igniting the dancefloor at one of the hands-down most fabulous Pop Montreal shows last year. She took requests, talked trash, danced and grinned all night, charming just about everyone in the audience, young and not-as-young, leaving a three-day smile on my face. So get out for that if you can, Saturday night at Metropolis.
In jazz-free Jazz Fest outings, catch the incongruous appearance of heavy-duty industrial noise electropop EBM crossover trio Claass, featuring Jordan Dare and two thirds of We Are Wolves, playing with fellow Montreal club scene stalwart Misstress Barbara as she performs her new live set-up, which is fun, poppy and a tad cheesy. That’s at Club Soda, Saturday night.
