Opening that Third Eye

Getting the dead to talk isn’t all that hard
or scary, says spiritualist

by CHRIS BARRY

Name: Nancy Tang

Age: “Ageless”

Occupation: Spiritualist/medium/founder of the Spiritual Enlightenment Center

Bio: This charming and mega-numinous Ahuntsic babe spent most of her working life making big real estate bucks, not even aware of her “healing gift” or ability to communicate with entities from beyond the grave. But upon recognizing she possessed “the gift” some 17 years ago, she started healing friends and family like there was no tomorrow, and then, after her husband, “a very spiritual man,” passed away in 2000, messages from beyond started coming Nancy’s way on a regular basis “and just never stopped coming.” Perceiving her husband’s death as “a spiritual awakening,” Nancy was soon moved to open up the Spiritual Enlightenment Center at 1476 du College in St-Laurent, where, among countless other courses on offer, she conducts a workshop called “Becoming a Medium,” an affair that’ll have you yakking with the spirits in no time. She drives “a very humble” 2004 Toyota Corolla.

Isn’t the ability to communicate with spooks something you’re supposed to kind of be born with? “No, everybody can be a medium, as everybody can be a healer. You just need to have the proper training, believe in it, and learn how to open your Third Eye. You see, people often block this communication because it scares them. They don’t want to communicate with the angels or lost loved ones.”

Outside of a potential concern for one’s sanity, what’s so scary about communicating with the dead? “It challenges everything they believe in. They think it’s a supernatural thing, that it’s not normal and that people will laugh at them. A lot of people can’t accept what I’m doing, they think I’m cuckoo, but I’ve found only peace, comfort, joy and love through this. It’s completely changed my life.”

How to get your Third Eye working for you: “It’s very important to know how to use all your senses. As is, of course, meditation. One exercise we do to encourage the Third Eye is, we get two students and I have one hold a feather in their hand, out of sight to the other students. I then ask that student to send out through thought, through that energy, what colour the feather is to the other students. Nine times out of 10, all of my students choose the correct colour. It always blows them away because, at the beginning, they never believe they can do it. To do it, you need to listen to your right brain, not letting your left brain confuse you, and focus. It’s really quite amazing.”

What everything over at the Spiritual Enlightenment Center is gonna cost you: “We’re a non-profit organization so everything here is on a voluntary donation basis, with all monies going to the centre. We’re all volunteers here. So long as God sends me two students, I’ll start a class. Usually the workshops are quite small, which I prefer—although occasionally we might have as many as six or eight people in them.” For more info, call Nancy at (514) 331-5870 or e-mail spiritualenlightenmentcenter@yahoo.ca.

Words of wisdom: “The purpose of life’s journey is to learn, serve and to love one another.”
