Where were we again?

by MORGAN STEIKER

Tonight, Thursday, July 9, we gonna let the pressure drop-a-drop on us over at Metropolis with a heavy line-up consisting of legendary band Burning Spear sharing the bill with none other than Toots & the Maytals. Enjoy a night of sweet riddims and the presence of legends who may not be around forever… come equipped with that sweet sensi!

Saturday, I’m glad to say that big homie Simahlak is launching a new night at la Sala Rossa called Homeplate. With a helping hand from Troy Dunnit and Lotus for its very first edition, Sim just added the extension to his much appreciated monthly Gumbo that tore the roof off at Coda last year with guests like Preemo and ?uestlove. If Homeplate tastes anything like Gumbo, we should have more than a mouthful for the months to come.

You should also go bid farewell to DJ Static, who is leaving the city after 14 years of priceless dedication to keeping the funk alive in MTL. The Final Countdown will be at Alizé and, for your information, Static is moving to Vancouver, so tell a friend.

You guys may remember the Red Bull Music Academy project I wrote about a few weeks back. As the application deadline is getting closer, Red Bull is bringing over spacey, headphone-music maestro Flying Lotus for a Ableton Live 8 workshop session at Off the Hook, Saturday, July 11 at 5 p.m. Later in the night, he’ll be unleashing a live set at Club Lambi with Speakerbruiser and Lunice.

Lastly, you should catch Halifax/Montreal-based hip hop group Something Good when they perform at Vinyl Wednesday night, launching their debut album Just Add Water and kickin’ off a new tour to go with it. Nice.
